Hickory Hills Walkway and Sidewalk Concrete

A walk with no lifted edges, no puddles and no toe-catchers.

Why Walks Heave, and How We Stop It

Frost gets under a walk. Clay swells. Tree roots push. A walk poured on bare dirt rides all of it, and within a few winters it has a lifted corner and a puddle in the middle. The fix is underneath. We break out the old sections and haul them away. We dig the path below the soft soil. We pack in crushed stone, layer by layer. Then we stake the forms tipped a little to one side, so rain spills onto the grass. Not down the path. Not toward the house. Thickness is usually about 4 inches. It gets a brushed finish for grip, rounded edges that resist shovel chips and control joints at even spacing. Then it cures covered and damp. On the sloped lots common in Hickory Hills, we also check the run of the walk from the street to the door so it does not turn into a ramp for runoff.

Walkway Work Includes

Front walk, side path or public-style sidewalk. Same list.

  • Old walk removed

Heaved or broken sections cut out and carted off.

  • Route set

Width and path marked with you, curves included.

  • Packed stone

Crushed stone compacted so frost has less to work with.

  • Cross-slope

Slight sideways tilt sends water to the grass.

  • Brushed surface

Texture that grips in rain and light snow.

  • Rounded edges

Tooled to resist chips from shovels and mowers.

  • Even joints

Spaced so cracks fall in straight lines.

  • Soil backfill

Edges filled after forms come out, so the lawn meets the walk.

Walkway Steps

  1. Measure and price

Route walked, drainage checked, written price with removal, base, depth and finish.

  2. Remove and prep

Old concrete out, path dug, stone compacted, forms staked with the right tilt.

  3. Pour and cure

Poured, brushed, edged and jointed. Covered while it cures. Forms pulled, edges backfilled.

Why Our Walks Stay Level

  • We fix the ground

Heaving is a base problem. That is where the work goes.

  • Rain goes sideways

Cross-slope keeps water off the walk and away from the house.

  • One contact

The crew lead who measured is the one who answers your calls.

  • Heaved sections removed
  • Stone in layers
  • Tilted for runoff
  • Chip-resistant edges
